24 Charlize Theron

Charlize Theron burst onto the scene in 1996 with a star-making performance in the otherwise forgettable 2 Days in the Valley, and she has remained in the public eye ever since. Charlize has appeared in such Hollywood hits as 1997’s The Devil’s Advocate, 1999’s The Cider House Rules and 2003’s The Italian Job, and she has worked alongside some of the biggest and brightest stars around, including Ben Affleck, Will Smith and Matt Damon. In 2004, Charlize deservedly won an Oscar for her searing performance as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in Monster, and has since been nominated for another Academy Award for 2005’s North Country.

Charlize remains one of the most constant forces on this list, having peaked at the No. 1 position in 2003. And although she spent 2006 lying low -- Charlize was completely absent from multiplexes during the year -- she’s certainly managed to keep busy in her day-to-day life. In addition to the various projects she has on the way, Charlize received an award from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) for “increasing the visibility and understanding of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.” Finally, Charlize’s willingness to poke fun at herself was never more evident than during her one-episode stint on Comedy Central’s Robot Chicken.

Expect to see a lot more of Charlize in 2007, as the actress has three films slated for release. Battle in Seattle, written and directed by Charlize’s longtime boyfriend Stuart Townsend, revolves around the chaos that ensues after protesters march in on a World Trade Organization meeting in Seattle, and pits Charlize opposite folks like Woody Harrelson, Ray Liotta and Michelle Rodriguez. Charlize will also be seen in a searing drama with Nick Stahl called Ferris Wheel, as well as in Paul Haggis’ In the Valley of Elah, alongside Tommy Lee Jones, Susan Sarandon and James Franco.
