36 Penelope Cruz

Originally a classical ballet student, Cruz first turned her attention toward acting as a teenager and soon found frequent work on TV shows and music videos. This exposure snowballed into movie roles, including the film All About My Mother (1999), her first film to receive sizable exposure in America. Films like Woman on Top (2000), All the Pretty Horses (2000), Blow (2001), and Vanilla Sky (2001) followed, as did a relationship with her Vanilla Sky costar, Tom Cruise.

From her initial placement at No. 58 on our Top 99 and a big jump to No. 32 last year, Cruz still commands a strong position on the list. She continues to deliver solid acting performances on both sides of the Atlantic, in big-budget movies and independent films. For instance, 2006 gave us her turn as a bad girl with her good friend Salma Hayek in the action/comedy Bandidas, not to mention top billing in Pedro Almodóvar’s comedy/drama Volver, for which she won an award for Best Actress in an ensemble at the Cannes Film Festival, and was a nominee for a Golden Globe Award and a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Award.

As for her personal life, Cruz and Matthew McConaughey (whom she met on the set of 2005's Sahara) announced their split as a couple this year, citing conflicting schedules.

2007 started on a high note for Cruz as she landed an Oscar nomination for her work on Volver. On the other hand, if Cruz was too busy to maintain a relationship in 2006, 2007 will probably find her single as well -- although she has been recently linked with Orlando Bloom. Cruz is reported to have several projects in development, both in Spain and in the U.S. Among these upcoming projects is the comedy The Good Night with Martin Freeman, Danny DeVito and Gwyneth Paltrow, and the drama Manolete with Adrien Brody.
