Somewhere in Colombia, there is a brave, slightly shameless photographer that all men should thank. He spotted Ms. Vergara walking on the beach, had the gumption to approach the dark-haired beauty, and somehow convinced her to try her hand as a model. That chance meeting led Sofia to a series of high-profile fashion and commercial gigs, and set off a wave of momentum that the one-time dentistry student has been riding ever since. Thankfully for all us North Americans, that wave carried Sofia all the way to the shores of the U.S., where her easygoing nature and flawless Latin beauty helped land her parts in TV shows like Hot Properties and feature films like Four Brothers (2005).
With a No. 33 ranking on our 2006 Most Desirable list, Sofia’s year started off great and only got better from there. She appeared in Nation Lampoon’s Pledge This with everyone’s favorite tarty heiress, Paris Hilton, and filmed the much-hyped TV comedy The Knights of Prosperity alongside geriatric rocker Mick Jagger. But her biggest successes happened offscreen. Raised by a well-off family in a poor region of Northern Colombia, Sofia was witness to extreme poverty and despair while growing up. Because of these experiences, Sofia has leveraged her fame and influence to help a variety of worthy causes, including a clothing line that is credited with creating 1,500 jobs in her native country.
