58 Cheryl Tweedy

Newcastle Brown Ale isn’t the only refreshing thing to originate from Newcastle upon Tyne, England. Cheryl Tweedy of Girls Aloud, an English pop girl group, also hits the spot. Born in 1983, the songstress became familiar with the spotlight at an early age, as she modeled and participated in fashion shows throughout her childhood. In 2002, she won a TV talent show and became part of Girls Aloud. A 2003 nightclub fight temporarily bruised her reputation, but she has since recovered. As she’s married to Chelsea soccer star Ashley Cole, she inevitably invites comparison to Victoria Beckham, the wife of soccer superstar David Beckham.

To debut nearly halfway up the Top 99 list is rare. Tweedy has accomplished just that, thanks in part to an eventful 2006. Her face was shown nearly as often as the soccer players’ during the FIFA World Cup in Germany last summer, and she gained notoriety as one of the WAGs (wives and girlfriends) who indiscriminately shopped and partied with their men’s money. Tweedy defended herself by reminding the press that she has her own career and cash, and that she wasn’t blowing her then-fiancé’s funds. Shortly after the Cup, Tweedy and Cole were married in England.

This year, Tweedy will continue her work with Girls Aloud and keep busy with various other projects. She’s the face of Coke Zero in the UK, and she’s reportedly working on a television documentary and a perfume line. Word has it that she also has a book slated for release in 2008. No word yet on whether she’ll transition to the big screen, but it wouldn’t surprise us.
